The Sidewinder can do both. 

Slip it under a vehicle, crank the handle and you have just set your stabilization chock.   Elevate the load?  Just crank it up. 

The Sidewinder is Rated at 7500 lbs ea and includes a 2-1 safety factor.

JYD Sidewinder other uses
Stabilizing & Lifting on All Fours
Quick 2 or 4 point  stabilization.   Can be used to release weight on suspension or make a partial or total lift of vehicle 
Used in conjunction with struts, the Sidewinder's pivoting head can adjust to sloping angles.   Tethered to a strut a vehicle can be lifted using the Sidewinder
Use the sidewinder in pairs under the roof rail or A-Post.  Stabilizing and lifting lifting from these points is possible with the Sidewinder.
The Sidewinder is primarily designed for automobile use.  Other applications exist in rescue operations, including USAR and Special Operations.

By removing two captured safety pins the head can articulate on its base allowing it to follow the shifting load.  

Attach a strap to the clevis and you can secure the Sidewinder to the load or a strut for stability.
