Original Scott Cylinders   -vs- Aftermarket (Pirate) cylinders?

There is a great push from aftermarket cylinders manufacturers to promote their pirated replacement parts.

Pirate company promotions claim; "Same As", "Better Than" "Equal to", "Longer warranty", "We supplied cylinders to that OEM 10 years ago" and so on...

What they don't tell you is equally important.

  • Why they are not the chosen supplier if their product is superior, cheaper and lasts longer?
  • What happens to your NIOSH Rating if you use their pirated replacement parts? .

I am not going to "knock" their product line, for all I know it's the best cylinder or the worst cylinder you can buy.  The biggest problems is, I don't know and either do you.

I don't know because it's not a Scott Cylinder.  It hasn't been proven to be better, it hasn't gone through the many tests a Scott Cylinder must go through and its not warranted by Scott.  Most of all, its not insured by Scott against failure.

The cylinder is only half of the story.  The valve is not a Scott Valve.  It's made by a valve company that used to contract valve manufacturing to Scott.   When Scott redesigned their valve, they brought valve manufacturing back in-house, where accountability and  quality control can be monitored.

When you purchase a Scott OEM replacement Cylinder Scott stands behind you.   If a cylinder in my department failed and someone was hurt, I would want the full backing of Scott and their Insurance company to stand behind me.

When you purchase a pirated part, you might get finger pointing.  It wasn't the cylinder that failed, it was the valve, or the neck o-ring, poor maintenance, lousy handling, the SCBA fill adaptor.

What you won't get is 100% accountability for all components and any failure that may occur.  Most of all you won't get the backing of Tyco - Scott Health and Safety and that's priceless

Original Scott Cylinders   -vs- Aftermarket (Pirate) cylinders?

STILL NOT CONVINCED?

  • Did you know if you replace any OEM part with an Aftermarket (pirate) Part the  NIOSH Rating on the entire air pak is void?  That also voids your OSHA rating which in turn Voids your NFPA rating for providing your firefighters with approved firefighting equipment.

  • Your Districts insurance company assumes you are using approved products. Using unapproved products makes your district non-compliant and that's not a position you want to be in after a catastrophic failure of an Air Pak.

  • Scott will not back you up if you use unapproved parts.  So basically your District is on their own in any law suit that arises from that Air-Paks failure.  (regardless of whether the failure is due to the pirate part or not)

  • Last but not least, using non-approved parts voids the Air-Pak warranty.

 NIOSH LETTER

*Pirate part = Aftermarket, not original equipment manufacturers (OEM)  approved replacement part.  Quality and Quality control are not guaranteed.   Usually sold at a discount off the OEM price.   Pirated parts are typically low in quality.

*Pirate company = Company that copies, "reverse engineers" others designs and markets as "just as good" as the original.
